๐‘€๐’ถ๐“Š๐’พ ๐‘€๐‘œ๐’พ๐“ˆ๐“‰๐“Š๐“‡๐‘’: STRIKES AGAIN!

So, as you guys know from my last post on this brand, I am definitely a fan of Maui Moisture. The products just work for my hair type (3c).

Their detangling creams were a welcome addition to my collection when they released them. If you know me and follow me on Instagram, then you will know that my curly/coily hair requires daily detangling and moisture. This is the kind of cream that I would use on an almost-daily basis, so I was keen to get my hands on it.

Self-love during these difficult times is KEY

For todayโ€™s post, I want to share another essential product for my curly girls. Over on my Instagram, I am using February, often considered as the โ€˜month of loveโ€™, to focus on self-love and self-care. I have been sharing things that make me feel good, that make me smile, that constitute as part of my journey to love myself.

There are still SO many opinions and reviews on the Maui Moisture shampoos and conditioners, on the fact that alcohol is high up on their ingredients list in certain products, on the DMDM Hydantoin which is used in some of their products, on how drying their shampoo can beโ€ฆ.

Commonly discussed issues with Maui Moisture ingredients:
DMDM Hydantoin, used in their Curl Quench Coconut Oil Smoothie and some of their conditioners is considered dangerous because of its toxic formaldehyde releasing component, although the percentage is so small that it has been approved safe by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel. It can cause irritation or an allergic reaction on sensitive skin and is banned in Japan.
Microcrystalline Wax (Microcristallina) is found in their curl smoothie and hair masks. This type of wax is not water-soluble and therefore needs a cleansing agent (shampoo) to remove it. If you only co-wash (wash with conditioner to aid moisture retention) then the use of this product would cause a hell of a lot of build up after a while, creating a barrier between your hair and the nutrients /moisture that it desperately needs.

Vanilla Bean Hair Butter:

Feel free check out my review of the vanilla bean hair butter here:

I truly love their hair masks and butters, but I wasn’t too sure if I would feel the same about their new(ish) detangling creams….

I will say first-off, that I am totally biased. I love hair creams, I adore detangling creams and the Maui moisture creams are so thick and luxurious, I find them hydrating and smoothing for (almost) frizz free curls. I have used both detangling creams and love the coconut milk one slightly more, to my surprise. It gives my hair a little more slip to detangle.

I love the first few ingredients; what they are and how high up they are in the ingredients list, but I’m not crazy about the inclusion of coconut oil. Other than that, nothing terrible sticks out to me.

I cannot honestly say that they make my hair noticeably easier to detangle as opposed to other detangling creams (kinky curly knot today, Activilong) etc….These ones work just as well. But in relation to detangling my hair with just water in it, yes, my comb or tangle teezer slides through with ease.

In saying that, I would still choose these detangling creams over others because of the moisture retention it aids and the ingredients in this formula.  Although it helps to detangle, it is truly a great styling product too.

What I like most about this cream is it is moisturising and doubles up as my second moisturiser after water. It helps to define my curls, leaves them shiny and manageable even after drying. I follow it up with either my homemade shea butter & oil mix or the vanilla bean butter from Maui themselves.

If you have type 3 hair like mine, I urge you to try one of these on your hair and see the results for yourself. They work for me…and when I say work, I mean work. I cannot speak for type 2 less curly, more wavy textures but I can tell that they would work on kinkier type 4 gals, maybe with a thick sealant or butter.

There are currently multiple offers running on the maui moisture range (18.02.2021):

The detangling creams are selling for 1/3 off so they come up to ยฃ6.66 instead of ยฃ9.99:

https://www.boots.com/maui-moisture-nourish-moisture-coconut-milk-detangling-cream-236ml-10286737

I am not sure if the creams are exclusive to boots stores and boots.com as I could not find them on Superdrug.com.

2 things to note:
-I do wash my hair regularly, so perhaps I cannot see any kind of long term dryness which other may experience if they are not cleansing regularly. I do get a build up, but I always have, due to the other creams and gels etc that I use, so I must cleanse my hair at least once a week, or I can co-wash every 3 days roughly.
-I ONLY ever use these two products on wet hair. I spray my hair every morning before I style, to detangle. So, this product seems to help lock in moisture (It does NOT provide it, this is important).

Works for me!
